Public Power

for today's wired world

we believe

°Nebraskans deserve the same benefits from competition as people in other states.

°Nebraska communities should be able to provide services to their people, as do communities in other states.

°Nebraskans are entitled to the same benefits of technology as people in other states.

°Public Power has provided electricity to the people of Nebraska as a cost well below the national average. It can do so in telecommunications, too. It is unconscionable that publicly owned resources should be barred from use simply to benefit private phone companies.

°On every phone bill every Nebraskans pays an extra 6.95% charge to fund hundreds of millions in subsidies to established phone companies because the phone companies claim they can not provide service to rural areas without such subsidies. That extra charge in Nebraska is among the very highest in the nation causing those subsides to have adverse economic impact in urban areas competing with out of state cities to attract information age businesses. At the same time the subsidies deter competition, innovation, and investment in rural areas.

°A majority of Nebraskans, overall and 2 out of every 3 Nebraskans who have formed an opinion, agree that public power and communities should be able to provide telecommunications competition.

°The salvation of the “State is the Watchfulness of the Citizen” and this is an appropriate matter for which to exercise the First Right Reserved to the People of Nebraska, the right to convene the second house of the Legislature.
